In Brazil it's a great end-of-year ritual: the presentation of the coming year's wall calendar by Burti Graficos, a Brazilian publisher and printing house. There are few calendars like it in South America, or anywhere else, for that matter. Created by Chilean graphic designer Alex Peirano Chacon, these are handsome poster-size affairs, measuring a splendid 82 by 71 centimeters. The Burti calendar is often compared to highbrow calendars such as Pirelli's, known for its classical essays of nude women. The Burti calendar, by contrast, explores a new theme each year--ensuring that each unveiling party in So Paulo turns into a cult happening.

Last year Burti featured paintings by the Tikuna Indians of the Amazon basin. While 1998 was devoted to the plumage and pageantry of religion and carnival, 2001 celebrates the work of Martin Chambi, a Peruvian photographer (1891-1973) practically unknown outside ...
