To RONTO -- Many primary care physicians are overlooking the benefits of hip protectors in elderly patients at risk for hip fracture, according to an expert on aging.

"Physicians and their patients are not as aware as they need to be of this simple intervention," Dr. Douglas Kiel said at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

All hip protectors on the market share the same basic design--a fitted undergarment, similar to biking shorts, with protective shells sewn into the sides, said Dr. Kiel of the department of medicine at Harvard Medical School and of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged, Boston.
