Hip protectors eliminate breaks

Elderly people are less likely to break their hips in falls if they wear specially designed hip protectors, according to a Finnish study.

Researchers studied 1,801 frail, elderly people age 75 to 87 for two years. Healthcare facilities gave hip protectors to 653 people at risk of breaking their hips; 1,148 people wore no hip protectors.

The results: Only four of the 653 elderly patients broke their hips while wearing the hip protector. But 67 of the 1,148 patients not…
