I am very pleased to present to our readers the first special issue of our journal on Globalization and New Governance in East Asia. Following the financial/economic tumble in East Asia in 1997, the "rosy predictions of unlimited growth/development potential of Asia" came to an abrupt end. Although the crisis shocked the world, the impact of the debacle on the Asian countries themselves was probably more painful and troubling. It brought about some thorough soul-searching and rethinking about themselves and globalization. How must the Asian nations come to terms with this seemingly "inexorable force?"
