It had been cloudy for days, but this day the skies were clear and it was sunny. It was hot, but not scorching. It was an almost perfect day for the Senior Olympiatrics.
The teams are composed of nursing home residents from the Beaver City Manor, Beaver City; Walker Post Manor, Oxford; and the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe - all located in Furnas County in southern Nebraska. The games were held in Arapahoe.
The games were supposed to begin at 9:00 AM, but the cars from the nursing homes in both Beaver City and Oxford were late in getting there. So the opening ceremonies were held closer to 9:30 a.m. - raising the flag, with a bugler playing "The Star Spangled Banner."
The games have been held for a number of years. They give residents a chance to exercise, win ribbons, socialize, or just talk over old times. The games have been called the Olympiatrics or Senior Olympiatrics. On this day, Friday, June 3, 1988, they were proclaimed the GeriOlympics.
Barb Vachal activities director and Sandy Klein of social services, both of Beaver City Manor, talked about how they planned the event.
"We prepare probably no longer than a month," said Klein. "If we were hosting it, it would be different '" 'Arapahoe practices beforehand;' said Vacha. "We'll be practicin next time."
Ten to 15 residents from each of the three homes participated in the games. Prizes were awarded were to all who participated: blue ribbons for 1st place, red for 2nd, white ribbons for 3rd place, and a green ribbon to all who did not win any other ribbons. So every resident who participated received a ribbon to show for it.
