The growing concern of the health care profession for the elderly is unprecedented. Until recently, medical science paid little attention to the special problems of the elderly. Old age was simply considered an inevitable and, therefore, normal part of human life.

Why is there such concern in society for the elderly, and what are the reasons for it? Multiple factors, which this article addresses and examines, seem to be involved.
