Investigating the Role of GABA

Neuropharmacologists have long suspected that the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, might play an important role in the intoxicating actions of ethanol. Early studies in animals showed that motor coordination was impaired when alcohol was combined with drugs that improved GABA nerve cell activity than when it was given alone.

Other studies also suggested that GABA might play a role in the way the brain compensates for prolonged ethanol intoxication.
