Women with spina bifida who become pregnant generally have positive outcomes, so physicians can reassure such patients that their prospects for pregnancy and childbirth are good, according to Dr. Margarita Arata and her associates at Royal Children's Hospital, Parkville, Australia.
They reviewed the obstetric experience of 17 women born with the disorder between 1945 and 1975 who achieved pregnancy at a median age of 25 years. There were 29 pregnancies, including 2 in women who needed ovulation induction to overcome infertility problems.
Four of the women were wheelchair dependent, four Walked with aids, and nine were able to walk independently (J. Reprod. Med. 45[9]:743-48, 2000).
