Statement before the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs Task Force on POWIMIA of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on June 15, 1988. Mr Lambertson is Deputy Assistant Secretary .for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.'

I appreciate this opportunity to meet again with the task force to discuss our continuing efforts to gain the fullest possible accounting for our missing in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam

Since February 1988, when we last met, there has been some progress. General [John W] Vessey and Vietnamese Vice Premier [Nguyen Co) Thach met again last week in New York to discuss the POW/MIA [prisoner of war/missing in action] question. As well as the emigration to the United States of former reeducation camp inmates and other humanitarian issues. The interagency group has continued to facilitate the implementation of the agreements reached in Hanoi last August between General Vessey and Vietnamese Vice Premier Thach.

During their June 8 meeting, General Vessey urged Vice Premier Thach to expeditiously resolve the questions about our missing men. Underlining once again the deep concern felt …
