Tokyo fire brigades seek young blood Yomiuri The fire brigades of Tokyo's 23 ward offices are to launch a recruitment campaign in January to try to replenish their aging ranks with younger volunteers, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned. Members of the fire brigades average 49 years of age, more than 12 years older than the national average. The large-scale campaign to recruit new firefighting volunteers will be the first of its kind in the nation. Tokyo's fire brigades can trace themselves back to the 47 firefighting brigades of the old town of Edo when the national capital was infamous for its fires, which often led to street fighting and rioting.
