Dot-com casualty list mounts as holiday season approaches.(Company Financial Information)

AT LEAST 130 Internet companies, including big names such as Garden.com and Pets.com, have shut down this year, with the pace of closures quickening in recent months.

A new study by San Francisco-based Webmergers.com found that 21 companies had shut down in the first half of November compared with 22 that shut down in the entire month of October.

And a flurry of new failures may come during the next few weeks, according to the report.

"With a grueling holiday buying season approaching, we believe some of these firms are choosing to fold rather than face the music without adequate resources," the report said.
