It seems that everyone has a story about how the market performs if the Republicans win or if the Democrats win the White House in November.

Maybe the real results can help you invest better this year and next.

The election cycle has produced pretty consistent results in the stock market. For the past 50 years, the third year of an election cycle (1999 was such a year) has proved to be exceptionally good for the stock market (The S&P 500 index rose 21 percent in 1999.)

In fact, since World War II, every such year has been a winner. Remember, however, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. But how do investors do in an election year …
