A group of 10 to 15 Japanese will walk from Washington to San Francisco next year in the Trans-America Walk 2001 event, joint organizers the Japan Walking Association (JWA) and The Yomiuri Shimbun announced Thursday.

In addition to celebrating the start of the new millennium, the walkathon will hopefully forge grassroots exchanges between Japanese and U.S. citizens as the walkers also will take part in various cultural exchange programs.

The Japanese team members, aged between 18 and 29, are scheduled to set off from Washington on March 30 and arrive in San Francisco on Sept. 7 after having walked about 5,000 kilometers. The following day, members of the …
