Web shopping portal cut staff sharply in order to 'survive and prosper'

GreaterGood.com is a lot smaller after paring its staff by two-thirds, but the Seattle-based shopping portal is also a lot closer to profitability.

In January, GreaterGood had 110 employees. Now, after layoffs that occurred mostly in the second quarter, a team of 40 remains, said CEO Randy Dirth, who arrived from Williams-Sonoma Inc. last November.

He said GreaterGood expects to be cash-flow positive next month, adding that the cuts were driven by changes in the way the company operates, as well as an effort to conserve cash.
