Joseph Lemieux, Owens-Illinois' chairman and chief executive officer, has said that its worldwide glass containers continued to benefit from increased unit shipments in the second quarter. Earnings were adversely affected by higher energy costs, higher interest expense, and unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Although weak macroeconomic conditions continued to affect the affiliates in South America and Eastern Europe, both regions showed continued signs of recovery.
