NWF and its affiliates in California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, South Dakota and Wyoming have asked the U.S. Forest Service to designate the northern sage grouse and Gunnison sage grouse as "sensitive species" on agency land in those states. The agency administers several million acres of sage grouse habitat across 11 western states.
