A former member of scandal-plagued cult Ho-no-Hana Sanpogyo was convicted of fraud Tuesday, provoking the government to investigate the possibility of ordering the organization to disband.
Michiko Ichinose, the 37-year-old head of the foot-reading cult's Urawa branch, was found guilty of swindling about 4 million yen from two women at her sentencing at the Tokyo District Court. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years.
The conviction marks the first ruling handed down against 15 members of the Ho-no-Hana cult who have been accused of swindling money from more than 30 victims.
