A Charlottesville, Va., research organization has issued a scathing report that throws more cold water on the rosy predictions emanating from the fiber-optics industry.

COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY RESEARCHERS (CIR), an independent organization that specializes in optical networking and network intelligence, released the 369-page "Optical Access in the Public Network" Sept. 20.

The report concludes "Overly bullish forecasts for the optical metro/access equipment industry ignore the fact that the potential market for such equipment is dominated by well-established service providers that will continue to be very cautious in their deployment of new platforms." …
