Hoping to attract mainstream American shoppers to the Internet, leading retailers and on-line media companies are teaming up to deliver free Internet service to the growing number of Web surfers searching for an alternative to paid network access. These alliances are especially attractive to off-line retailers in search of a roadmap to e-commerce success that doesn't require the enormous capital investment associated with the startup of an e-commerce division.
