The role of support provided by family members deserves special attention for several reasons. First, family members provide the form of support that elders find least stressful. Second, in times of stress, elders often turn to their families for support. Third, elders who receive support from their families are much less likely to be placed in nursing homes than those who do not.

One of the most comprehensive studies of family support, in 1979, was based upon a 1975 national sample of community-resident elderly.' The findings were reported on two aspects of the family- support system: family visiting patterns and family-provided care in times of illness. ...
