New youth skeins serve up eclectic mix of laughs, scares
HOLLYWOOD For buyers in the kids biz, Mipcom begins two days early. On Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, Mipcom Junior, the preshow showcase for children's entertainment will give them a head start on sorting through numerous offerings.
Since Mipcom Junior's inception in 1993, the number of participating companies has grown from 299 to 379 and the number of buyers has nearly doubled, from 207 to 407. Records will be broken again this year, promises Michael Weatherseed, TV unit director of event organizer the Reed Midem Organization.
"There's more to see, more to buy, more to sell," he says, citing not only the expansion of outlets but also of the marketplace, with the Internet arena accounting for scores of new buyers and programs.
This year, over 750 programs, half of them new, will be available for screening in 200 private viewing stations. …
