PROBLEMS at Norwegian State Railways (NSB), including broken axles on the new 210km/h tilting Signatur trains, planning errors, and poor revenue development, have led to the shock dismissal of CEO, Mr Osmond Ueland. NSB has been under fire for some time for what has been described as "frequent accidents and a macho attitude towards safety".
The axle problem is an embarrassment both for the train's manufacturers, Adtranz, and for NSB. They entered service in November 1999 and a low-speed derailment, in which there were no injuries, occurred on June 17 when an axle broke near Kristiansand. The trains were taken out of service after cracks were found in other Signatur axles.
It was determined that rust had eaten into the cracks faster than expected, causing the axles to break. Mr Ronny Solberg, CEO of Adtranz Norway, told the press that the axles were painted to avoid rust, but that the paint had been damaged either at the factory, in transport, or in service operation.
