Come 15 October and the curtain will rise on a whole new world of German culture in Calcutta. Beginning with the national Ballet of the Munich Opera, it will proceed to several rare events ranging from contemporary German art to the Berliner Ensemble to a film festival on the decade of German cinema that will last till March next year. All this will part of the German Festival in India that will cover 27 Indian cities - perhaps the biggest cultural extravaganza so far.

The Festival of India in Germany took place in 1991-92. Ever since then there have been attempts to find a suitable date for a reciprocal festival in India. A change of political guard in Germany delayed …
