Alan Fortunoff, Leading Retailer

Alan M. Fortunoff, 67, succumbed to liver cancer on July 4 at his home in Old Westbury, N.Y. Fortunoff was legendary in the jewelry industry for helping transform a mom-and-pop store in Brooklyn into a retailer specializing in discounted jewelry and home furnishings.

The Fortunoff's Fine Jewelry and Silverware store in Brooklyn, N.Y., was founded by parents Max and Clara Fortunoff in 1922. Alan and sister Marjorie continued the work their parents started and opened additional stores in Wayne, Paramus, and Woodbridge, N.J., as well as the flagship store in Westbury, Long Island, and one on Fifth Avenue in New York City. …
