Low census leads Baptist to close down its pediatric ICU.(Brief Article)

At the end of the month, North Central Baptist Hospital will close its pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Karen Ehrat, executive vice president of hospital operations for the Baptist Health System, says that the closure will enable the facility to better meet the needs of the adult population living in that area -- the population that uses the hospital the most.

"We've simply been running out of adult medical and surgical beds," she says. "The volume in our pediatric intensive care area is relatively low, while we've seen a tremendous expansion in our adult services."

There will be no staff reductions as a result of closing the PICU, Ehrat says. …
