Residents in extended-care facilities often have multiple physical conditions for which multiple medications are prescribed. In addition, drugs are given for constipation, diarrhea, sleep, or pain. Either physical illnesses or medications can alter the mental status of the elderly, and all too frequently, when that occurs, additional antipsychotic or tranquilizing medications are added.'
