Discussions held in 15 cities involving 455 nursing home residents elicited their views on quality of care. When asked what constitutes quality care and which factor is most important in creating a good nursing home environment, residents most often mentioned the attitudes, qualifications, competence, and the quality of the interactions between and among staff and residents. The quality of the residents' life was positively influenced by helpful, friendly, competent, and cheerful staff who treated each resident as a person worthy of dignity and respect.'
