On a list of mundane activities across the United States, making concrete would probably share top billing with watching paint peel.

Yet Houston-based U.S. Concrete Inc. has parlayed such ho-hum horizons into a top spot on a sexy new list, joining two other local companies among the 100 members of the Business Week roster of Hot Growth Companies.

U.S. Concrete has produced enough ready-mixed concrete to crack the top 10 on the national roster of sizzling growth companies. Cranking out nearly 5 million cubic yards of concrete annually, the Houston manufacturer weighs in at No. 9 on the new list.
