Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan, the modern guru of the sarod, can trace his lineage to the horse- trading Pathans of Bangash. He has been showered with honours since he was 15, including the Padmashree and the Kala Ratna. By the time he was 19, lovers of classical music were in raptures over his demonstrations.

Gushed a critic after a recital from the then 20 year old young man:"Amjad Ali Khan demonstrated a brilliant jhala unheard of in recent times. Even during the crescendo his left hand was busy, bringing out beautiful melodious patterns to enrich the fast, rhythmic strokes of his right hand".
