WASHINGTON, June 21 (Bernama) -- An international animal rights group has claimed that beef exported to Malaysia from India is not halal as the cows are improperly slaughtered.

But the claim was immediately rejected in Kuala Lumpur by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) which said all beef imported into Malaysia is halal.

The US-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said in a statement on Tuesday that it met Malaysian Embassy officials here last week and urged Malaysian Muslims to reject Indian beef.

Malaysia is the largest importer of beef from India with a total value of US$52 million (RM197.6 million) a year. …
