Warehouse wars: Costco scopes city with sights on Sam's Clubs.(Brief Article)

While others have tried and failed, Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco Wholesale Corp. may prove to be the most formidable competitor yet to go up against Sam's Club when the well-backed company comes barreling into town later this year.

Costco, which is the largest wholesale club operator in the country and a direct Sam's competitor, has hired local real estate firm Shelby Estus Realty Group Inc. to scour Houston for prime locations for development of several new warehouse club stores.

Shelby Estus president Tom Estus was unable to comment on Costco's Houston plans, but industry sources say Costco is negotiating on several parcels of land around town, including a site at the northeast corner of I-10 and Bunker Hill and at the northwest corner of …
