Portlanders may soon get their chance to nibble on famed Krispy Kreme doughnuts, courtesy of Chicago restaurateur Rich Melman.

Rapidly growing Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. said it granted Pacific Northwest franchise rights to a Melman affiliate called Icon Doughnut Development Co. Icon will open Krispy Kreme stores in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., plus Honolulu.

"Those are the cities where development is certain," but the franchise rights extend to all of Oregon, Washington and Hawaii, and the province of British Columbia, said Icon's chief executive, Gerard Centioli. "This is a concept that depends on a few high-traffic locations as compared to many lower-traffic ones in smaller cities."
