The Self-Help Housing Corporation of Hawaii was established in 1983 in response to the severe shortage of affordable housing in Hawaii. Claudia Shay, executive director, said, "For several decades Hawaii had one of the highest housing prices in the nation." The rationale behind the existence of Self-Help, a private non-profit corporation sponsoring self-help housing projects with a coalition of interested parties, is to provide technical assistance to low income families to enable them to build their own homes.
