Hospital Autonomy: - the patients' view.(Brief Article)
The little debate that has taken place so far in the Press about the autonomy drive for public hospitals has mainly been centred on the views of hospital administrators, medical teachers and doctors. How autonomy impinges on the average patient has not perhaps received sufficient attention. MANSOOR MALIK now tries to seek patients' reactions to the new move.
Most ordinary citizens are confused about what will happen to the cost of treatment because of the autonomous status given to government hospitals. During a visit to the Lahore General Hospital and the Jinnah Hospital, this reporter talked to several patients and their attendants. A majority of those interviewed at the emergency wards said they were given admission slips ("parchi") free of cost as well as necessary medicines after examination by the doctors on duty. …
