Schools get competitive for talent
Arizona's school districts are getting-competitive in their bids to attract and retain hard-to-find qualified teachers.
"Districts are doing incredible things to lure teachers," said Nedda Shafir, director of community services for Washington Elementary School District in Phoenix, which is looking to hire 100 teachers this year. "It's gotten really competitive and we're really trying to be aggressive in getting people in."
Today it's common practice for districts to act much like businesses by offering:
* Signing bonuses.
* Stipends for training.
* Job fairs.
* Aggressive marketing, particularly by districts with higher salaries.
* Advertising on the Internet.
* Recruiting out of state.
Despite these inducements, schools are scrambling because of the growth in Arizona's population, an increase in the number of charter schools and a cumbersome certification process.
