A petition to add Atlantic salmon to the federal endangered species list has triggered considerable controversy in Maine, but the Natural Resources Council of Maine, one of NWF's affiliates, is heading a campaign to replace contention with cooperation.

Opposition to an endangered listing is strongest from the following groups: Salmon farmers fear that an endangered designation will require them to take expensive measures to prevent captive stock from breeding with wild fish. Blueberry growers worry that they will be restricted in taking water from rivers where salmon spawn. And the forestry industry is concerned it will have to modify its logging practices to protect …
