Forest Lands Earn Green Certification In New York State.(Brief Article)

New York is the first state to receive NWF SmartWood certification for environmentally sound management of all of its multiple-use public forest lands-more than 700,000 acres that are managed for timber, wildlife, water quality and recreation.

The certification verifies that the forests are administered for long- term ecological, social and economic health. To win certification, forest operations must show, for example, that they protect streams and wetlands and conserve wildlife, including endangered species. Wood products and lumber from those forests can then be labeled as "certified" to inform consumers …
