New media legal experts have expressed concern that the recent Demon Internet libel case could lead to a deluge of copycat litigation. But the consensus is that the case doesn't set a legal precedent, as Demon knew of the defamatory post before legal proceedings began.

Last week Demon agreed to pay ukp15,000 damages and an estimated ukp230,000 in costs to Dr Laurence Godfrey, who said he had been defamed by anonymous postings on a Demon newsgroup. Demon must also pay its own costs, taking its legal bill to around ukp500,000.
