Northern & Shell, the publisher of OK! magazine, is planning a 500 [pounds sterling] million flotation. Richard Desmond, the company's founder, is in talks with advisers about going public and plans to use the capital gained to expand OK! overseas and build an online media operation.

Granada's proposed bids for acquiring either Carlton Communications or United News & Media have been referred by the Government to the Competition Commission. The Commission, which delivers its report on the proposed Carlton/United merger before 16 May, will have until 26 June to give its ruling on the Granada proposals.
