So you want to surf the Web using your television? WebTV was the first big name in set-top Internet devices and still offers a cost-effective way to send and receive e-mail and surf the Web. The problem: Most people want to do more -- track finances, write a book, scan pictures, work with images, etc. -- after they get a taste of the Internet, and those tasks cannot be done using WebTV alone.

However, DISH Network -- one of the major satellite TV providers -- recently launched what it calls the DISHplayer 500 (www.dishtelevision.com). This unit combines a satellite receiver, a WebTV Internet device and personal video recorder -- along the lines of the Philips TiVo (www.tivo.com) or Replay TV (www.replaytv.com).
