New Delhi, March 29. - Rock icon and former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, has written to the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, protesting against cruelty to animals, mainly cattle, in India.

"I know the Constitution of India prohibits cruelty to cattle, yet every cattle protection law on the books is being violated as I write... The world remembers Gandhiji's words that a nation can be judged by how it treats its animals. India's cows were the Mahatma's cherished example of how India led other nations in respect for animals. Please do not allow his words to ring hollow in the 21st century," Sir Paul wrote.
