2000 Kit Aircraft Directory.

We begin year 2000 with the 16th annual directory of kit aircraft that lists more than 700 designs in three consecutive issues. This issue contains details for 440 kits including 62 rotorcraft and 14 aircraft that are in development. Excluding those aircraft listed in "In Development," there are 63 kit and rotorcraft designs that were not in last year's directory.

Manufacturers Supply the Data

To assure up-to-date information, each of the manufacturers listed in these directories has been contacted and their information noted. All the statistics that we print here were supplied by the manufacturers, and the reader should bear in mind that performance figures could be optimistic. We found changes from last year in most of our listings, mostly in telephone area codes, changed locations, web or e-mail addresses and, of course, in the number completed and flown.

Unless otherwise noted, kit prices are for airframes only. They do not include engines, propellers, instruments and avionics. For fabric-covered aircraft, covering materials may not be included, and finish paint won't be in the kit.

Fast-Build Kits Abound

Compiling this material, we found an increasing emphasis on fast-build kits where the builder trades more money for less building time. Some companies such as Team Tango (formerly D.F.L. Holdings) offer a package where you build your kit at the factory aided by factory jigs and trained personnel. In just four six-day weeks and 10-hour days, Team Tango says, the builder can fly the new plane home after using the premanufactured instrument panel and firewall-forward engine package. Neico Aviation (Lancair) is now among the companies offering technical assistance during the early stages of assembly.

Check Out Everything Before Writing a Check

We hope that these directories work for you like a supermarket shopping cart. Tour the aisles and see what you like and perhaps can afford. Then research the project by contacting builders of similar aircraft. Find out if factory building time and performance specifications are reasonable. Check on factory builder support and insurance availability.

Find out how the airplane flew for the builder. Attend EAA meetings and talk with other builders. Travel to fly-ins where factory pilots and builders congregate. Sit in the aircraft. And, if you are truly serious, fly a factory demo or fly with an enthusiastic builder whose pilot skills you trust.

Updating this new directory, we found that the kit aircraft business is in good shape. There are many new designs and new combinations of powerplants and props. How about skis or floats? Maybe it's time to hint to the family that you deserve a really great gift soon.
