National Transportation Safety Board probes accident; pilot radioed that cargo had shifted
Emery Worldwide suffered its first fatal aircraft accident in its 50-year history Feb. 16. A DC-8 freighter crashed near Sacramento, Calif., just after takeoff from Mather Airport. The pilot had radioed back to the control tower that the plane's cargo had shifted, sending the plane into an uncontrollable dive before he could make it back to the airport.
The aircraft crashed into a nearby auto auction yard, missing several residential neighborhoods bordering the former air Force base. The plane immediately burst into flames, igniting many of the cars and turning the crash scene into a burning pile rubble. The three …
