CALCUTTA, March 8. - The election of the state BJP president may not be a smooth affair this time because the party is divided over the issue.

A keen contest between Mr Sukumar Banerjee, a former state president, and Mr Asim Ghosh, the present state president, appears evident.

Party insiders say that a host of leaders, of the state and district levels, who are unhappy with Mr Tapan Sikdar, want Mr Banerjee to be the next state president while the choice of Sikdar loyalists is Mr Ghosh.

The election for the post is due in May.
