Computer system managers in Greater Cleveland have begun to dabble with the operating system Linux in much the same way as an artist testing a new color palette for a portrait.

Although Linux is a long way from challenging operating systems Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows NT for dominance in the desktop and business computer market, it is earning some devotees among Northeast Ohio's tech set.

Mark Spieth, manager of systems administration of Interactive Information Services Inc., a computer consulting firm in Cleveland, is applying a touch of Linux to his business.

"We started as a Windows NT shop and integrated Linux where we could for several reasons," Mr. Spieth said. "Linux is so stable. We love Linux servers because they rarely…
