The online buying revolution got its start before 1999, but the ranks of dot.com companies wanting a piece of the multibillion-dollar electronic commerce pie continue to swell.

"Most of the interesting things that have happened over the year have been associated with how technology is used, rather than with specific new technology developments," said Ora B. Smith, president of the Science and Technology Campus Corp. at Ohio State University. "We have seen sharp growth in e-commerce and the formation of a bunch of really hot dot.com public companies."

Nowadays, anyone with an Internet browser and a credit card can shop online for just about any commodity, from cosmetics to clothes to cars. …
