In 1999, "mixed use" was the mantra of urban redevelopment as retail and entertainment enjoyed a flourishing symbiotic relationship. Luxury hotels and timeshares surged ahead in the hospitality business, and bigger continued to seem better in the cruise ship industry.
The architectural School of New Urbanism, which promotes mixed retail, office and residential development in a pedestrian-friendly environment, continued to propagate throughout South Florida. In Palm Beach County, the success of Boca Raton's Mizner Park has helped to spawn development of Jupiter's Abacoa Town Center and West Palm Beach's CityPlace.
Abacoa began the year with its first neighborhood, New Haven, complete and nearly sold out. Eventually, Abacoa will house 15,000 residents, two Florida Atlantic University campuses, a 7,000-seat stadium, parks, schools, shops, restaurants and offices, all set in old-fashioned-style …
