Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASM Lithography (Veldhoven, The Netherlands) has its sights set on the top spot in lithography. Doug Dunn, the company's new CEO, says he would like to see the company achieve first place. "That would be a measurement of the success of our work," he notes.
ASML, founded in 1984, produces photolithography systems which print out the circuitry of chips on silicon wafers. The Dutch company overtook Japan's Canon in 1997 to become the world's number-two maker of steppers and scanners. Photolithography is frequently an important step in the silicon micromachining process.
Dunn told the news services that ASML's market share by year end was in the 30% range - "33% to 34% if we are lucky," he says. Nikon of Japan had a 42% share of the lithography market in 1998, sown from 44% the year earlier, according to market researcher Dataquest.
