MTN has reported on many "systems-on-a-chip," and now comes one developed by Dutch researchers that places an image on the proverbial chip and promises to make better pictures. Herman L. Peek of Philips Semiconductors (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) led the chip development efforts. His team developed a prototype image sensor on a chip that produces a picture whose quality rivals that of 35- mm film, at least for black-and-white versions. They packed 6.2 million sensing cells onto their device by shrinking each cell to 3 micrometers on a side. The chip is 11 mm on the diagonal, which is larger than typical commercial chips.
