TRACK laying for the TGV Mediterranee high-speed line in southern France was officially launched on June 3 by Mr Louis Gallois, president of French National Railways (SNCF), and Mr Claude Martinand, president of French Rail Network (RFF), who welded the first two rails.

Track laying is being carried under two contracts awarded to French companies. The contract to lay about 200 track-km on the northern section is worth FFr 95 million ($US 15.5 million) and is being carried out by Seco/DGC and Giral.
